Feline Panleukopenia Virus

Feline Panleukopenia Virus

In the past month, Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru has witnessed the tragic death of seven leopard cubs due to infection by the highly contagious Feline Panleukopenia Virus, also known as Feline Distemper. This viral disease poses a severe threat to cats, affecting rapidly growing cells in the body, including those in the bone marrow, intestines, and skin. Infected animals suffer from severe symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, often leading to fatality within four to five days. While there is no specific cure for this virus, treatment focuses on managing symptoms with intravenous fluids and antibiotics to control secondary bacterial infections.
