Fisheries Development Projects Launched Under PMMSY

In move to boost fisheries in Puducherry, Union Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian launched various development projects in Karaikal. This initiative falls under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The event took place at the National Institute of Technology, Karaikal. It focused on enhancing the livelihoods of fishermen and improving infrastructure along the coastal region.

Key Initiatives Under PMMSY

The launch included several important projects. These projects aim to improve fisheries production and support local fishermen. Key initiatives involve the installation of artificial reefs at four locations. An integrated fisheries facility costing ₹2 crores will be established in Pattinacherry village. Additionally, groundwork for climate-resilient housing is set to begin.

Financial Assistance and Infrastructure Development

Financial assistance was distributed to local fishermen during the event. This support includes selection orders for subsidised boats, ice boxes, engines, and safety equipment. Significant investments are being made in infrastructure, including a ₹4-crore overhead water tank in Thiruppattinam village. These measures aim to enhance the operational capacity of local fisheries.

Collaborations for Research and Development

Memoranda of About (MoUs) were signed with notable institutions. IIT-Madras will assist in harbour modelling. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will conduct pilot studies on integrated seaweed-cage culture. These collaborations are expected to encourage innovation and sustainability in fisheries practices.

Statistics and National Growth

Mr. Kurian brought into light impressive statistics regarding fish production. India’s fish production has increased from 95 lakh tonnes in 2014 to 184 lakh tonnes currently. Fish exports have also seen a substantial rise, doubling from ₹30,000 crore to ₹60,000 crore. The government aims to reach a target of ₹1 lakh crore in fish exports in the near future.

Technological Innovations in Fisheries

The use of technology is also being emphasised. Mr. Kailashnathan mentioned the potential of ISRO’s satellite data. This data can help fishermen identify fish-rich zones, thereby improving their catch and ensuring maritime safety. The focus is on adopting sustainable fishing practices.
