Goa’s cashew industry recently achieved a significant milestone with the awarding of a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition serves to protect the unique characteristics and qualities of Goan cashew and distinguish it from cashews sourced outside the state. The GI tag is conferred upon products originating from a specific geographical region, acting as a trademark that signifies authenticity and quality in the international market.
The Goa Cashew Manufacturers’ Association (GCMA) filed the application for the GI tag, with the Department of Science, Technology, and Waste Management, Government of Goa, facilitating the process. The move aims to combat the marketing of cashews from other regions as ‘Goan cashews’ by ensuring that only authentic Goan cashews bear the GI logo.
Rohit Zantye, President of GCMA, emphasized the importance of preserving Goan cashews’ identity and quality. He mentioned that tourists often seek out Goan cashews for gifting, but over the years, smaller traders from other states have captured a significant portion of the market by selling cheaper imported cashews labeled as ‘Goan cashews.’ This practice negatively impacts local cashew processors and manufacturers, as well as tarnishes the reputation of ‘brand Goa.’
With the GI tag, Goan cashew nuts will carry the GI logo, preventing traders from using the ‘Goa cashew’ label without registration. This move is expected to promote and safeguard the rich heritage of Goan cashews.
Goa’s cashew industry has faced challenges, including competition from cheaper imported cashews and stringent compliance norms. The influx of imported cashews has led to a decline in sales for traditional Goan cashew processors, with the number of processing units decreasing over the years.
The GI tag not only aims to protect the industry but also positions Goan cashews as a valuable export product. It highlights the quality and unique flavor of Goan cashews, making them attractive in international markets.
To fully leverage the benefits of the GI tag, strict action against illegal marketing practices is crucial. Ensuring compliance with quality, packaging, and labeling standards will enhance the reputation of Goan cashews and support local cashew processors.
Goa’s cashew industry has a rich history dating back to its introduction by the Portuguese in the 16th century. What was initially considered a crop for afforestation and soil conservation eventually became a significant contributor to the state’s economy. The economic value of cashew nuts was discovered by Goan prisoners exiled to Portuguese Africa during Goa’s freedom movement in the mid-18th century.
Cashew production in Goa evolved from a cottage industry to a large-scale enterprise. By 1961, it accounted for about 60% of industrial production in the state, with a substantial portion being exported to countries like the United States, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and West Germany.
The GI tag serves as a testament to the rich heritage and quality of Goan cashews, safeguarding its legacy for generations to come and boosting its presence in both domestic and international markets.
