In recent developments, the Government of India has reconstituted the Central Advisory Board on Archaeology (CABA). This move is aimed at strengthening the relations between the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and other stakeholders in the field of archaeological research.
Understanding the Central Advisory Board on Archaeology
The Central Advisory Board on Archaeology is a governing body that involves “five individuals nominated by the Government of India” and former Director-Generals of ASI. The board is to convene annually with its primary role being to provide guidance to the Central Government on “issues pertaining to archaeology,” as referred by its members.
The establishment of the board is intended to foster a closer relationship between the ASI and Indian Universities that are engaged in conducting archaeological research. Furthermore, it will encourage studies related to the application of archaeological principles, training future archeologists, and facilitate the association of learned societies in India and of the State Governments with the activities of the ASI.
The Role and Function of the Archaeological Survey of India
Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) operates as the main organization responsible for the archaeological research and protection of the nation’s cultural heritage. It supervises more than 3650 historic monuments, archaeological sites, and remains of significant national importance.
The ASI’s scope of work encompasses carrying out surveys of antiquarian remains, exploration and excavation of archaeological sites, and the conservation and maintenance of protected monuments.
Establishment of the Archaeological Survey of India
The establishment of the ASI dates back to 1861 when it was founded by Alexander Cunningham, who also served as its first Director-General. On account of his significant contributions in the field of archaeological research in India, Alexander Cunningham is frequently referred to as the “Father of Indian Archaeology”.
Significance of ASI and CABA in Archaeological Research
The crucial alliance between the ASI and CABA plays a significant role in maintaining and preserving the rich cultural heritage of India. Their collaborative work not only encourages the discovery and conservation of archaeological sites but also promotes active research in the field through their ties with universities and other learned societies.
Their concerted efforts ensure the preservation and promotion of India’s historical past, contributing to its unique cultural identity. They provide invaluable opportunities for future archaeologists and researchers, ensuring a thriving field of study and exploration for generations to come.
