Objectives of Introducing a Public DNS
The inception of India’s own public DNS is primarily oriented around ensuring availability. This is especially beneficial for smaller Internet Service Providers (ISPs) lacking a trustworthy DNS. It is important to note that the user retains the liberty of choosing any DNS they prefer. There is no compulsion to exclusively shift to the Indian public DNS.
Execution Timeline
The government plans to roll out the DNS completely within a span of four to six months. The whole execution process will be carried out by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Understanding the Concept of DNS
A DNS translates domain names that a user enters into their browser into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. These IP addresses are essential to access respective websites. For instance, when an individual types a web address such as ‘iaspoint.com,’ the Internet Service Provider surveys the DNS correlated with the domain name. Following this, it converts it into an IP address, which is more machine friendly (192.0.78.166 is the IP for iaspoint.com) and directs the Internet connection to the appropriate website. In simpler terms, the DNS can be seen as the Internet’s phone book.
