Green Hydrogen Hub Project in Andhra Pradesh

The Green Hydrogen Hub (GHH) project is a landmark initiative under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. Set to be established in Pudimadaka, Anakapalli district, the project aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a key player in the green energy sector. The foundation stone for this ambitious project will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 8, 2025. The project promises economic and environmental benefits, with a total investment of approximately ₹1,84,700 crore.

Project Overview

The Green Hydrogen Hub will cover an area of 1,600 acres, with a dedicated land size of 1,200 acres valued at ₹1,006 crore. The project is strategically located near the Bay of Bengal, approximately 20 km from National Highway-16 and 36 km from Gangavaram Port.

Investment and Capacity

The project involves a phased investment strategy. The largest portion, ₹62,900 crore, will be allocated in 2027. It aims to establish 20 GW of renewable energy capacity. The facility is expected to produce 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen and 7,500 TPD of hydrogen derivatives, including green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel.

Infrastructure Development

The GHH will feature a comprehensive operational framework. It includes a green chemical zone, a chemical storage terminal, port infrastructure, and a transmission corridor. Additionally, there will be a 7 GW substation and an 80 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant. This infrastructure is essential for supporting the production and distribution of green hydrogen.

Employment Generation

The project is expected to create over 57,000 jobs by 2032. This will boost the local economy and provide a range of employment opportunities in various sectors, particularly in renewable energy and manufacturing.

Environmental Impact

The Green Hydrogen Hub will play important role in India’s efforts to achieve its non-fossil energy capacity target of 500 GW by 2030. Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, which aims for 160 GW of renewable energy capacity and an investment of ₹10 lakh crore.

The overall project is expected to be completed by 2032. The common infrastructure development phase will occur between May 2025 and December 2026. This timeline ensures that all necessary facilities are in place for the successful operation of the Green Hydrogen Hub.
