High Court Halts Development at Karwar Port

In recent news, the High Court of Karnataka has delivered a verdict directing the State government to halt all ongoing developmental projects at Karwar port under the Sagarmala project. The suspension of activities aims at ensuring the preservation and protection of this port’s unique environmental and ecological balance.

Understanding the Geographical Significance of Karwar

Karwar, a significant location nestled in the Uttar Kannada district, lies on the Southern side of the Kali River. Amongst the ten minor ports in Karnataka, it stands out as the only all-weather natural port, maintain functionality regardless of seasonal changes.

Its geographical position is noteworthy; with the Arabian sea on one flank and the Western Ghats on the other, it presents a picture that embodies the beauty of Karnataka. Consequently, Karwar often earns the title of ‘Kashmir of Karnataka’. Adding to this beauty is the rich biodiversity it hosts, featuring a wide range of flora and fauna, contributing to its emblematic status within the state.

A Closer Look at the Sagarmala Project

The Union Cabinet approved the Sagarmala project in 2015. The central objective of this project is to promote holistic infrastructure development along the coastline, spanning an impressive length of 7,516 Km. This would be achieved through modernisation, mechanisation, and computerisation.

With this port-led development framework, the government aims to triple its cargo traffic, marking a significant leap in maritime transport. Additionally, the project comprises the establishment of rail or road linkages with port terminals. This feature ensures last-mile connectivity to ports, a crucial aspect for efficient and effective operations.

The Impact of Enhanced Multi-modal Connectivity

The Sagarmala Project does not simply limit itself to port development; it ambitiously aims at enhancing multi-modal connectivity. These include railway transport, inland waterways, coastal services, and road transport. By developing linkages with new regions, the project envisages a vast network of transport routes further improving the efficiency of goods and passenger transport.
