Himachal Pradesh Launches ERSS Emergency Number ‘112’

Historically, India has been home to several emergency response systems. However, this has often led to confusion due to the multitude of contact numbers. To address this issue, the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) is launching in Himachal Pradesh. This system incorporates a single emergency response number (112), that amalgamates all State emergency helplines.

Introduction to ERSS

The ERSS initiative has been introduced under the recommendation of the Justice Verma Committee, which formed in the aftermath of the distressing Nirbhaya case back in December 2012. The project was formerly recognised as the Nationwide Emergency Response System. The Central Government has allocated funds from the Nirbhaya Fund for the implementation of this vital project across the country.

Single Number 112 under ERSS

Himachal Pradesh is the pioneer state in applying the pan-India single emergency response number ‘112’ under ERSS. With the advent of this system, one Emergency Response Centre (ERC) has been established along with District Command Centers (DCCs) that cover the entire state. The functionality of this ERC extends to connecting distressed calls to Police, Fire, Health, and other relevant helplines through the centre in the respective State.

Integrated Services

The ERC is adeptly integrated with the Police (100), Fire (101), Health (108), and Women’s helpline (1090) to provide prompt emergency help via the single emergency number – 112. This service eliminates the need for citizens to memorise multiple helpline numbers.

Enhanced Features of the ‘112 India’ Mobile App

The service also includes the user-friendly ‘112 India’ mobile app. This app is integrated with the Panic Button on smartphones and the ERSS State website to provide immediate assistance.

One of the value-added features of this app is the SHOUT feature. This has been specifically designed to guarantee women’s safety. It enables women to seek instantaneous assistance from registered volunteers in the vicinity, in addition to immediate help from the Emergency Response Centre.

Increased Effectiveness with Location Based Services

To increase the efficacy of emergency response, the ERC has incorporated Location-Based Services provided by Telecom Service Providers. This advanced integration further ensures a swift and accurate emergency response.

Conclusion

The introduction of ERSS in Himachal Pradesh marks a notable achievement for India’s emergency response system. By uniting all necessary services under one accessible number, citizens are given uncomplicated access to fast and effective aid in times of emergency. The system demonstrates a significant stride forward in ensuring public safety and responding efficiently to emergencies.
