I2U2, an acronym for India, Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, is a strategic alliance often referred to as the ‘West Asian Quad’. Established in October 2021 as a result of the Abraham Accords, I2U2 focuses on issues surrounding maritime security, infrastructure, and transport. The Abraham Accord was the first Arab-Israeli peace deal in 26 years and was mediated by the USA.
With a stated aim to discuss “common areas of mutual interest”, I2U2 seeks to strengthen economic partnerships in trade and investment not only within the regions represented but beyond as well. Six spheres of cooperation have been identified, namely water, energy, transportation, space, health, and food security.
The First I2U2 Summit: Key Highlights
The first summit of I2U2 leaders was held virtually, leading to several significant announcements. The UAE declared its intention to invest USD 2 billion in India for establishing Food Parks across the country. India, in return, will provide the necessary land for these projects and facilitate the incorporation of farmers into the Food Parks.
It was also revealed that a “hybrid renewable energy project” would be supported in Gujarat, India. This project, consisting of 300 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar capacity, aligns with India’s goal to achieve “500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030”.
In addition, private sectors from the US and Israel will be invited to contribute their expertise and innovative solutions to ensure the sustainability of the projects undertaken by the group.
Food Parks and Their Importance
The concept of a Food Park aims to establish direct connections from farm to processing to consumer markets. It comprises Collection Centres (CCs) and Primary Processing Centres (PPCs) linked to a Central Processing Centre.
Food Parks are crucial in addressing food insecurity in South Asia and the Middle East by maximizing crop yields, thus reducing “food waste and spoilage”. Given India’s status as a significant food producer globally, investments in Food Parks aim to create a sustainable solution for energy and food security. This holds particular importance in light of the recent military situation in Ukraine, which has led to negative implications on global food and energy sectors.
Furthermore, Food Parks are expected to increase farmers’ income significantly and streamline agricultural supply chains, especially considering India’s proximity to Israel and the UAE.
The Way Forward with I2U2
It is clear that partnership is the key to overcoming current global conflicts and challenges such as food and energy security, climate change, and healthcare. India’s longstanding ties and engagements in the Middle East, including with Gulf countries and Israel, position it uniquely within this alliance.
Just like the United States plays a critical role in deepening Israel’s integration into the region, likewise, India also has an important role. Moreover, India’s significant position in the Indo-Pacific makes its role in the Quad strategic, reinforcing its critical role in regional geopolitics.
