ICANN and NASSCOM Collaborate on IoT Identifier Technology

The global internet body, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has teamed up with National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) of India for the development of an identifier technology. This technology will manage devices and infrastructure using Internet resources. The initial focus of this collaboration is the updating of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices through the domain name system (DNS), regardless of the operational status of the manufacturer or supplier.

Developing a Joint Research Structure

Both ICANN and NASSCOM are working together to establish a structure that will enable the joint identification of research projects. They are specifically targeting those that involve new technologies related to the unique identifier system of the internet. The first such research project will test the application of the DNS in updating IoT firmware. Further, it will also investigate how the proposed technology can be scaled beyond the confines of a laboratory environment.

Understanding the Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT consists of devices ranging from simple sensors to complex smartphones and wearables, all connected together. It enables devices on closed private internet connections to interact with each other. Moreover, IoT unites these networks, offering an opportunity for devices to communicate not only within their close silos but across different networking types. This results in a significantly more interconnected world.

About Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)

Formed in 1988 by the US Department of Commerce, ICANN is a non-profit body tasked with the administration of domain names and Internet protocol addresses (IPs) worldwide. As of October 1, 2016, it operates independently from US control. ICANN ensures that computers across the internet can find one another via defined unique pathways and identifiers. It coordinates the maintenance and methodologies of several databases, including unique identifiers linked to the namespaces of the Internet. This is essential for the secure and stable operation of the internet.
