Impact of Google AI Overviews on Web Traffic

Impact of Google AI Overviews on Web Traffic

Google’s AI Overviews feature is reshaping how users interact with search results. Introduced to provide quick, AI-generated summaries at the top of search pages, it aims to answer queries instantly. However, emerging evidence shows this may reduce traffic to traditional websites. A 2025 Pew Research study marks behavioural changes among Google users exposed to these AI summaries.

AI Overviews and User Behaviour

AI Overviews offer concise answers drawn from multiple sources. Users seeing these summaries click on traditional search links only 8% of the time. In contrast, users without AI Overviews click links nearly twice as often, at 15%. Clicking on links within AI summaries themselves is rare, occurring in just 1% of visits. Moreover, users tend to end their search sessions more frequently after viewing AI summaries, with 26% leaving immediately compared to 16% without summaries.

Effect on Website Traffic

AI Overviews contribute to a rise in “zero-click” searches, where users find answers without visiting any website. This reduces organic traffic to many sites. Key industries such as fashion, travel, cooking, and DIY report noticeable declines in visitor numbers. The summaries push traditional listings lower on the page, sometimes below the visible area, decreasing their visibility and click-through rates.

Sources and Content Licensing

Most AI Overviews cite popular platforms like Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit. These three sources account for around 15% of citations in AI summaries and 17% in traditional results. Google’s $60 million content licensing deal with Reddit ensures real-time access to its data, reinforcing Reddit’s presence in AI-generated content.

Search Query Characteristics and AI Summaries

Longer and more complex queries are more likely to trigger AI Overviews. Only 8% of short, one- or two-word searches generate summaries. This rises to 53% for searches with ten or more words. Queries starting with question words (who, what, when, why) produce AI summaries 60% of the time. Searches framed as full sentences generate summaries in 36% of cases.

Transition to AI Mode

Google is moving from AI Overviews to a new AI Mode, which replaces traditional search results entirely with chatbot-style answers. This shift could further reduce website visits and change online browsing habits. Google claims this will not alter how people surf the internet, but its AI bot Gemini suggests otherwise, citing evidence of behavioural change.

Broader Implications

The rise of AI-generated search results challenges the traditional web ecosystem. Reduced traffic affects content creators and advertisers. It also raises questions about information diversity and source transparency. The dominance of a few platforms in AI summaries may limit exposure to a wider range of content.
