India and Gabon Strengthen Diplomatic and Trade Relations

Recently, a delegation from Gabon closely interacted with the Indian business community during their visit to India. This meeting was coupled with India’s congratulations to Gabon on its successful Independence Day, celebrated on 17th August. The Vice President of India had also recently visited Gabon, where he signed two MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding) marking significant milestones in the relationship between the two countries.

The Importance of the MoUs

The MoUs that were signed involved the establishment of a Joint Commission between the Governments of India and Gabon, promising closer cooperation and partnership between the two nations. Secondly, there was an agreement for Dalit training involving the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Services and the Gabonese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to foster diplomatic expertise.

Reviewing the India-Gabon Partnership

India and Gabon share a history of warm and friendly relations. They have maintained their alliance since the pre-independence era of Gabon. The African nation received its first high-level visit from India when the former Indian Vice President visited in May 2022. Both countries are currently non-permanent members of the United Nation Security Council (UNSC), which further highlights their growing global influence.

Trade and Business Relations

Bilateral trade between India and Gabon reached a noteworthy USD 1.12 billion in 2021-22. Statistics even show that India is the 2nd largest destination for Gabonese exports. Furthermore, over 50 Indian companies are part of the Gabon Special Economic Zone, showing a vibrant presence of Indian businesses in Gabon.

International Cooperation

India and Gabon are both members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a forum focusing on issues relevant to the developing world. Gabon supports India’s candidature at various international forums. India also extended its congratulations when Gabon was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2022-23.

Progress in Renewable Energy

Gabon was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the International Solar Alliance agreement, an initiative lauded by India. Gabon has set a target of achieving 100% clean energy by 2030, and India has offered to extend all possible assistance to help Gabon achieve this ambitious goal.

Educational Partnerships and Scholarships

Several Gabonese nationals have availed scholarships and training programs in India under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and ICCR schemes. This relationship has enriched the educational ties between both countries.

Energy Cooperation

India imported approximately USD 670 million worth of crude oil from Gabon in 2021-22, indicating the crucial role Gabon plays in catering to India’s energy security needs.

Indian Diaspora in Gabon

The Indian community in Gabon is actively engaged in infrastructure projects, trading, and export of timber and metal scrap. Apart from their active involvement in businesses and industries, they continue to keep Indian culture alive in Gabon through celebration of major Indian festivals.

Future Prospects

The exploration of India-Gabon cooperation in green energy, services, health and agriculture sectors remains a priority. Efforts to broaden the economic partnership to attract more investment are also necessary. Furthermore, there is potential for mutual knowledge transfer in the farming sector which will strengthen ties in agriculture.
