India Celebrates Goa Liberation Day Annually

Goa Liberation Day is a significant annual event in India, observed on 19th December. This milestone date commemorates the liberation of Goa by Indian armed forces in 1961, which ended the long-standing Portuguese rule that had lasted for an impressive 450 years. The historical proceedings that led to this significant moment began in 1510 with the Portuguese colonization of various regions in India.

The Era of Portuguese Colonization

The Portuguese commenced their colonization journey in India around 1510. By the end of the 19th century, the Portuguese dominion over India had seen a significant reduction and was limited to a few territories. These included Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, and Anjediva Island.

Within these territories, the Portuguese established a colonial rule that lasted several centuries and significantly influenced the culture, architecture, and lifestyle of the people within these areas.

The Rise of the Goa Liberation Movement

In response to the extended Portuguese colonial rule, the Goa Liberation Movement emerged. This movement was a concerted effort by the people to secure freedom from the Portuguese. It started as small-scale revolts against the colonial authorities and gradually built momentum.

The period between 1940 to 1960 witnessed the peak of the Goa liberation movement, marked by heightened activities aimed at ending the Portuguese rule.

Military Intervention: Operation Vijay

With diplomatic efforts yielding no fruitful results, Indian authorities resorted to military intervention to liberate Goa from Portuguese rule. This operation was codenamed ‘Operation Vijay’.

This operation was a joint effort involving the Indian Navy, Airforce, and Army. This decisive military intervention led to the successful liberation of Goa on 19th December 1961.
