India Expands Energy Efficiency Program to Appliances

In an effort to bolster energy efficiency, the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has broadened the scope of its Standards & Labelling (Star Rating) program to encompass microwave ovens and washing machines within the country. As a part of this initiative to make appliances more energy efficient and cost effective for users, the program is set to be implemented on a trial basis until the end of 2020. The aim is to save over 3.0 Billion Units by 2030, which would correlate with a reduction of 2.4 Million-ton of CO2 Green House Gases (GHG).

Program Implementation

This innovative program, developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), is primarily intended to raise awareness among consumers about energy-efficient appliances, thus steering them towards options such as energy efficient microwave ovens and washing machines. To facilitate the process, manufacturers can register their products through a BEE-developed online portal. In addition, any model or brand of washing machine or microwave oven can apply for a Star Rating, ranging from 1 to 5, following a review by the BEE and a test report from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) or equivalent labs.

About Bureau of Energy Efficiency(BEE)

The BEE operates as a statutory entity within the Ministry of Power, Government of India. It assists in formulating policy and strategy with the central goal of reducing the energy intensity of Indian economy. BEE’s role involves collaboration with designated consumers, agencies, and other entities to identify and utilize existing resources and infrastructure pursuant to the functions under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories(NABL)

As a constituent board of Quality Council of India, NABL was established with a goal of providing an accreditation scheme that would involve third-party assessments of technical competence, including testing and calibration laboratories, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers. The primary objective is to serve the government, industry associations, and the industry as a whole.

Quality Council of India (QCI)

Registered as a non-profit autonomous society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, QCI is aimed at establishing an accreditation structure in India and promoting the quality movement throughout the country. This is achieved primarily through the undertaking of a National Quality Campaign.

Anticipated Impact of the Program

Energy Units Saved by 2030 GHG Reduction by 2030(million-ton of CO2)
3.0 Billion Units 2.4 million-ton

The Way Forward

With the introduction of this program, a significant shift towards energy-efficient appliances is anticipated. Not only will consumers be able to save on energy costs, but this initiative will also contribute towards the larger goal of environmental sustainability by reducing GHG emissions. Despite being implemented on a voluntary basis initially, it can be surmised that given its far-reaching benefits, the program will witness widespread adoption and support from both manufacturers and consumers alike.
