India, France Conduct ‘Garuda VII’ Air Exercise

The Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air and Space Force (FASF) are actively participating in the ‘Garuda VII’ exercise at Air Force Station Jodhpur, marking the fourth time India has hosted this international event.

What is Garuda VII?

Garuda VII is the seventh iteration of a crucial bilateral air exercise between India and France. After a hiatus of two years, the event is taking place once again, demonstrating the strong ties between the two nations.

In the past, the first, third, and fifth editions of this exercise were held in 2003, 2006, and 2014 in India at the Air Force Stations Gwalior, Kalaikunda, and Jodhpur, respectively.

Participation in Garuda VII

For this year’s event, FASF is participating with a significant force comprising four Rafale fighter aircraft, one A-330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, and a team of 220 personnel.

On the other hand, the IAF has also brought robust representation with Su-30 MKI, Rafale, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, and Jaguar fighter aircraft. In terms of airborne support, they have deployed the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Mi-17 helicopters.

Further, the IAF contingent will also be showcasing its Combat Enabling Assets such as Flight Refueling Aircraft, Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS), and Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C).

The Significance of Garuda VII

This joint air exercise serves as a platform for India and France to boost their operational capability and interoperability. The two forces get the opportunity to share best practices, fostering an environment of mutual growth and learning.

Both IAF’s and FASF’s participation in the exercise is fundamental to promoting professional interaction and exchange of experiences. It enhances operational knowledge, helping both forces develop tactical strategies and functional improvements. This collaborative effort significantly strengthens the bilateral relations between India and France.

Other Defence Exercises

In addition to Garuda VII, India and France also participate in several other defence exercises that span across all branches of military service. Such exercises include ‘Varuna’, a Naval exercise, ‘Desert Knight-21’, another air exercise, and ‘Shakti’, an Army-centric exercise.

These exercises are essential for maintaining readiness, fostering international cooperation, and ensuring both nations stay at the forefront of global defence capabilities. The Indo-French defence partnership is built on mutual respect, shared values, and a desire to maintain peace and security in the region and beyond.
