India Inaugurates Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit

The Prime Minister of India recently inaugurated the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit, placing India in the spotlight as it is set to take on the lead chair of GPAI in 2024. GPAI is an alliance of 28 countries together with the European Union, all of which have adopted the ‘New Delhi Declaration’ of the GPAI.

Key Highlights of the GPAI Summit

During the Summit, significant topics such as the national AI portal and the AIRAWAT initiative were discussed. The Prime Minister raised concerns over the potential misuse of deep fake technology. The YUVAi initiative featured prominently at the Summit, showcasing the winners’ AI models and solutions. To foster digital inclusivity, the Prime Minister suggested using AI to offer digital services in local languages.

Four different sessions were organized, each with a unique theme – responsible AI, data governance, the future of work, and innovation and commercialization. Industry panel discussions, workshops, research symposiums, hackathons, and the Global AI Expo are some of the side events of the summit to showcase AI progress and encourage debate.

Delhi Declaration of the GPAI

The Delhi Declaration of the GPAI underlines the need to harness opportunities and alleviate risks associated with AI. It emphasizes the importance of trust, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in AI and recognizes AI’s potential contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Declaration also supports international cooperation on AI research, innovation, and policy.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI refers to the capability of a computer or robot to perform tasks usually requiring human intelligence and judgment. Although no AI can perform the variety of tasks an ordinary human can do, in specific tasks, some AI can match human performance.

Exploring AIRAWAT: The Cloud Computing Platform

In 2019, NITI Aayog proposed the establishment of a cloud computing platform named AIRAWAT (Artificial Intelligence Research, Analytics and Knowledge Assimilation Platform). This proposal aligns with the government’s plan to make India an AI leader among emerging economies, and it aims to transform sectors such as education, health, agriculture, urbanization, and mobility.

Deepfake: Artificial Intelligence at Its Extreme

Deepfakes refer to synthetic media that uses AI to manipulate or generate visual and audio content, usually with the goal to deceive. To create deepfakes, a technique called generative adversarial networks (GANs) is used, involving two competing neural networks: a generator and a discriminator.

The YUVA AI initiative: Empowering Youth with AI Knowledge

The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) in partnership with Intel India launched the ‘YUVAi- Youth for Unnati and Vikas with AI’ program. This program aims to provide school students from classes 8 to 12 with a deeper understanding of AI and empower them to become human-centric designers and users of AI.

The Insight into GPAI Summit

The GPAI Summit, initiated by India, aims to equip school students with AI skills for inclusive development. The New Delhi Declaration emphasizes the need for a global AI framework grounded in democracy, human rights, and responsible practices.

Previous Civil Services Examination Questions on AI

Several questions related to AI have been asked in the Civil Services Examinations. For example, in 2020, a question was asked about AI’s capabilities in the present state of development. Another question in 2018 revolved around the terms ‘WannaCry, Petya and EternalBlue’, and their association with cyber attacks. The significance of IT industries in major cities of India and the implications of the fourth industrial revolution were also discussed in the 2022 and 2020 examinations, respectively.
