Role of the Indian Navy under SAGAR Vision
In accordance with the Indian Government’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), the Indian Navy plays an active role in this exercise. The SAGAR initiative was launched by India’s Prime Minister in March 2015 as a strategic approach to India’s engagement in the Indian Ocean region. Through this initiative, the Indian Navy assists other countries in the Indian Ocean by conducting Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, search and rescue missions, and other capacity-building activities.
As part of this initiative, the Indian Navy works to enhance our capabilities to safeguard land and maritime interests, deepen economic and security cooperation in the littoral region, and build greater trust while promoting respect for maritime rules and norms. Addressing maritime threats like piracy and terrorism are also key aspects of SAGAR.
