The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment recently launched Elder Line, marking the commissioning of the first Pan-India toll-free helpline number (14567) in service of senior citizens. This significant step was taken ahead of International Day of Older Persons, annually marked on October 1st. Preceding this initiative was the launch of the Seniorcare Aging Growth Engine (SAGE).
About Elder Line
Elder Line serves as a comprehensive information, guidance, and emotional support platform – particularly focused on addressing pension, medical, and legal issues. It also offers immediate assistance in instances of abuse. It aims to provide all senior citizens, or their associates, with a single platform that spans the country. Here, they can connect, voice their concerns, and obtain information and guidance on everyday challenges.
The Need for Elder Line
Based on data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India, by 2050, India will be home to over 319 million elderly citizens, a significant increase from the present 120 million. The elderly population grapples with various challenges including mental, financial, emotional, physical, and legal difficulties. The Covid-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges and has necessitated enhanced support structures such as Elder Line for senior citizens.
Other Initiatives for Senior Citizens
Several other initiatives aimed at aiding elderly citizens have been launched. These include the Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP), Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY), Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY), Vayoshreshtha Samman, and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act, established in 2007.
The Concept of Ageing
Ageing is an unavoidable, irreversible, and universal process, which begins at conception and persists until an individual’s death. However, the point at which a person’s productive contribution diminishes leading to economic dependence can be viewed as the advent of the aged phase of life. The National Elderly Policy classifies individuals in the 60+ age group as elderly.
The newly launched Elder Line initiative is a commendable move in light of India’s rapidly ageing population and the myriad challenges faced by the elderly population. It serves as a testament to a commitment to ensure the welfare of elderly citizens, supporting them in their day-to-day lives, and empowering them to navigate their challenges with ease and dignity.
