World Polio Day: An Awareness Drive
Every year, on October 24th, the World Polio Day is commemorated to amplify awareness regarding the significance of polio vaccination in protecting children. Polio, a highly infectious disease that dates back to ancient times, poses serious life-threatening risks and can lead to debilitating conditions such as paralysis or muscle weakness in arms and legs.
The polio virus thrives in the infected person’s throat and intestines, spreading mainly through unhygienic food and water or even a sneeze or feces. Vaccination remains the primary line of defense against this disease. The Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) induces antibodies in the blood, preventing the spread of the virus to the nervous system, thereby shielding against polio-induced paralysis.
Simultaneously, the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV), an injectable three-dose vaccine, can be administered alone or in conjunction with other vaccines like diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, and haemophilus influenzae. Together, they form our strongest weapon in the fight against this incapacitating disease.
