India, Portugal Collaborate on National Maritime Heritage Museum

In an effort to illuminate the rich maritime history of India, the country has collaborated with Portugal to establish a National Maritime Heritage Museum in Gujarat at Lothal, one of the most significant archaeological sites in India. The museum will exhibit India’s centuries-old tradition of inland waterways and its history of trade conducted through water routes.

Why Lothal?

Lothal was chosen as the location for the museum due to its rich archaeological remains, testifying to its ancient significance as a major hub for maritime activities during the Harappan civilization. These remains showcase the advanced engineering standards employed during the time period to create an artificial dock, a feat of scientific ingenuity that was unparalleled anywhere else in the world during the 3rd millennium BC.

Funding and Implementation

The project has received a grant from the Government of India for construction purposes. The foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister in March 2019. To ensure successful implementation, numerous entities are involved, including the Ministry of Shipping, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the State government, and other stakeholders.

Stakeholder Role
Ministry of Shipping Implementation of the Project
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Aid in uncovering and preserving archaeological artifacts
State Government Providing necessary local support and facilitation

About Sagarmala Programme

This ambitious project is being driven by the Ministry of Shipping through its Sagarmala Programme. This programme was approved by the Union Cabinet on 25th March 2015 and aims to utilize India’s long coastline and expansive inland waterways for industrial growth.

The primary objective of Sagarmala is to promote port-led direct and indirect development. This means creating a robust infrastructure that allows goods to be transported to and from ports in a prompt, efficient, and cost-effective manner. The establishment of the National Maritime Heritage Museum under this project further underscores its commitment to preserving and promoting India’s rich maritime legacy.
