India Ranks 49th in Chandler Good Government Index

Recently, India has been placed 49th in the prestigious Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI). This index evaluates the effectiveness of governance among 104 countries worldwide, using over 50 open data points. The top position was secured by Finland.

The Chandler Good Government Index Explained

The CGGI is a product of the Chandler Institute of Governance, a nonprofit organization based in Singapore. It is centered on seven pillars, namely leadership and foresight, robust laws and policies, strong institutions, financial stewardship, attractive marketplace, global influence and reputation, and helping people rise.

Purpose of the Chandler Good Government Index

The main objective of the CGGI is to aid governmental leaders and public officers globally to enhance their nation building and institutional capacity. This is achieved through training sessions, research and advisory work. In addition, the index provides tools and guidelines for effective policymaking, helping nations to improve the quality of public services they offer citizens.

How South Asian Countries Fare

Among the South Asian countries ranked in the CGGI, besides India’s rank at 49th, Sri Lanka came in at 74th, Pakistan is ranked 90th, and Nepal stands at 92nd.

Indian Initiatives Encouraging Good Governance

To monitor the status of governance in the country, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions launched the Good Governance Index. This index assesses the impact of various interventions undertaken by state governments and union territories.

Good Governance Day

In an effort to promote awareness about accountability among government officials and Indian citizens, Good Governance Day is celebrated annually on December 25th. This day corresponds with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

National e-Governance Plan

The National e-Governance Plan aims to make all government services accessible to the common man. The vision is to offer these services via common service outlets, ensuring they are effective, transparent, reliable and affordable.
