India ranks 77 in Global Bribery Risk Matrix of TRACE

The Global Bribery Risk Matrix was released by TRACE on November 19, 2020. India has scored 45 and has been ranked at 77th position among the 194 countries. 

Key Highlights

India was ranked at 78th position in the year 2019 with its score of 48. In the 2020 version of the ranking, India has performed slightly better than the countries like China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. In the India’s neighbour, Bhutan has been placed above India at the 48th rank. Denmark has topped the list. Denmark is followed by Norway, Finland, Sweden and New Zealand. Countries at the bottom of the list are North Korea, Turkmenistan, South Sudan, Venezuela, Eritrea.

India’s Performance

India’s overall score was 45. India’s score in other domain is understated:

  • Interactions with Government- 50.
  • Anti-bribery deterrence and enforcement- 53.
  • Government and Civil Service Transparency- 36.
  • Capacity for civil oversight – 40.

Global Bribery Risk Matrix ranking

This ranking is prepared by TRACE International. TRACE international is the world leading anti-bribery standard setting organisation. The Global Bribery Risk Matrix measured the bribery in 194 countries and they were ranked on the basis of score. Score under the survey was calculated on the basis of four parameters namely, Transparency in Government and civil service, business interactions with government, Civil society oversight capacity and anti bribery deterrents & enforcement.  Apart from these parameters, role of media was also considered while ranking the countries. Higher score means, the country is at higher risk of business bribery while less score means lesser cases of bribery in the country.
