The recent news highlights the support India has provided to the Maldives with a delivery of 6.2 tonnes of essential medicines under Operation Sanjeevani, part of efforts to battle against COVID-19.
Medicine Delivery by Indian Air Force
The consignment of vital medicines was delivered aboard an Hercules C-130J-30 aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force. The package included several vital pharmaceuticals including influenza vaccines, antiviral drugs such as lopinavir and ritonavir, along with consumables like catheters, nebulisers, urine bags, and infant feeding tubes. Notably, the antiviral drugs lopinavir and ritonavir have been utilized in the treatment of COVID-19 patients in several countries.
Continued Assistance to the Maldives
This is not the first instance of aid offered by India to the Maldives. In March, India dispatched a 14-member Army medical team to Maldives for setting up a viral testing lab and donated an additional 5.5 tonnes of essential medicine.
India’s Historical Support to Maldives
Looking back, India’s assistance to Maldives ranges from military support to disaster management. In 1988, the Indian Armed Forces played a crucial role under Operation Cactus in neutralizing a coup attempt. Post the devastating 2004 Tsunami, India was also among the few nations that extended help to the Maldives. In 2014, during the drinking water crisis in Maldives, India operationized ‘Operation Neer’ to supply drinking water. The two Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), produced indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and given to the Maldivian armed forces by India, have also been instrumental in saving multiple lives over the years.
India and Maldives: A Historical Overview
India’s connection with Maldives goes beyond recent assistance, dating back to shared historical, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, and commercial links. India was among the first nations to recognize Maldives post its independence in 1965, establishing its mission in Male in 1972.
Joint Defence Initiatives
In terms of defence, India has been a significant contributor to the defence training of Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF), meeting approximately 70% of their defense training necessities. Both countries also conduct a joint military exercise named ‘Ekuverin’.
Disaster Management Collaboration
Previous instances of assistance, such as during the 2004 Tsunami and the 2014 water crisis in Male, highlight the commitment of the Indian government towards helping the Maldives during critical times.
Trade and Tourism Ties
On an economic level, India stands as the 4th largest trade partner for Maldives following UAE, China, and Singapore. In 2018, India ranked as the 5th largest source of tourism in Maldives. Given that the Maldivian economy heavily relies on its tourism sector as a primary source of government revenue, the robust relationship between the two nations holds significant importance.
