India-UK Collaborate on Food Production Amid Environmental Stress

Recently, the Union Minister of Science & Technology highlighted the importance of collaboration between India and the United Kingdom to address mutual concerns. A primary focus of this partnership involves efforts toward achieving Food Security and Zero Hunger goals.

Global Collaboration for Enhanced Science and Technology Development

The collaboration calls for a collective approach in science fields such as agriculture, medicine, food science, pharmaceutical developments, engineering, and defense technologies. The potential outcomes of this India-UK joint initiative may encompass a variety of programmes, including student exchange initiatives, basic research endeavours, technology and product development, and their subsequent implementation through joint collaboration.

The Challenge of Shrinking Arable Land

A significant issue addressed in the discussion pertains to Sustainable Food Production, particularly in response to the dilemma of shrinking arable land in the South Asian region. This, coupled with the impending threat of Global Climate Change, requires urgent attention. It is reported that the percentage of arable land in South Asia was 43.18% in 2018 and has been in decline since the early 1970s. The proposed solution includes increasing growth yields and promoting more intensive land use to compensate for the reduction in arable land area.

Improvement in Nutritional Quality of Foods

The National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) could play a crucial role in addressing nutritional security amidst shifting global climate conditions. Recognized as a leading institute, NABI functions at the intersection of Agri-Food and Nutrition Biotechnology.

Joint Funding Initiatives to Tackle Challenges

As climate change progresses, it’s important to rethink the global pattern of food production and distribution. This will require joint funding initiatives to develop a coherent and stakeholder-relevant R&D program.

Building on the India-UK Partnership

India and the UK share a robust partnership rooted in shared history and rich culture, with opportunities for growth powered by the diverse Indian diaspora in the UK. The UK is one of the largest investors in India among the G20 countries. Both nations are considering a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Roadmap 2030: A Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

To strengthen bilateral ties, both countries have adopted Roadmap 2030 in 2021. This roadmap provides a framework for cooperation across multiple fields, including health, climate, trade, education, science and technology, and defence.

Security and Defence Initiatives

Security and Defense collaboration includes working on Maritime Domain Awareness, joint trilateral exercises, support to India’s indigenous development of the Light Combat Aircraft Mark 2, and various military exercises.

Addressing Climate Change

A significant step in addressing climate change is the launch of ‘Green Grids Initiative – One Sun One World One Grid’ (GGI-OSOWOG) at the COP26 World Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow. Backed by over 80 countries, this initiative aims to accelerate the development and deployment of interconnected electricity grids and improve energy access through mini-grids and off-grid solutions.
