The Indian Air Force (IAF) commemorated its 88th Air Force Day on the 8th of October, an important day in Indian military history. This article aims to provide an overview of the IAF’s history, operations, and how it celebrates this special day.
History and Key Points of IAF
On October 8, 1932, the Indian Air Force was officially established as a supporting force to the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. Its first operational squadron came into existence a year later in 1933.
By the 1940s, after its involvement in World War II (1939-45), it was renamed the Royal Indian Air Force. The moniker remained until the establishment of the republic in 1950, after which it reverted to the original name, Indian Air Force.
Today, the Indian Air Force stands as the fourth-largest air force globally, following the USA, China, and Russia. Its headquarters are stationed in New Delhi.
The Motto and Structure of the IAF
The motto of the IAF, ‘Touch the Sky with Glory,’ is extracted from the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, symbolizing its soaring aspirations and ambitious goals.
The President of India presides as the Supreme Commander of the air force. Operational command falls under the jurisdiction of the Chief of Air Staff, who is an air chief marshal.
Significant IAF Operations
Post-independence, the IAF played a crucial role in wars with Pakistan and the People’s Republic of China, demonstrating its grit and capabilities.
One noteworthy operation was ‘Operation Meghdoot,’ launched on April 13, 1984. The Indian Army, along with the IAF and paramilitary forces, carried out this operation to secure control of the heights dominating the Siachen glacier.
In addition to warfare, the IAF has also been involved in several relief operations to combat natural disasters such as the Gujarat cyclone in 1998 and the tsunami in 2004. It also actively participates in United Nations’ peacekeeping missions.
Air Force Day Celebrations
Air Force Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm across various IAF establishments in the country. The main event includes a grand parade and flypast at the Hindon Air Force Base in Ghaziabad.
This year, the airshow featured an array of aircrafts including the Tejas LCA, Mig-29 and 21, Sukhoi-30 as well as the newly inducted Rafale jets. In addition to these, helicopters like Chinook and Apache were also on display.
The IAF’s history, operations, and celebrations reflect its enduring dedication to serving and protecting the nation. Each year, the celebration of Air Force Day serves as a reminder of this commitment and the IAF’s critical role in maintaining national security.
