The Indian Army is planning to petition the Defence Ministry for an exception to acquire the Kamov-226T (Ka-226T) utility helicopters from Russia. This endeavour stems from the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) between India and Russia in 2015, which resolved to provide 200 Ka-226T helicopters at a calculated cost exceeding USD 1 billion. The intention behind this procurement is to replace the outdated Cheetah and Chetak fleets in both the Indian Army and Air Force.
Understanding the Kamov-226T Helicopter
The Ka-226T is a brainchild of Russia’s renowned Kamov design bureau. Its assembly will be undertaken by the joint venture India Russia Helicopters Limited (IRHL), a coalition between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russian Helicopters (RH). This ensures that the helicopters are assembled within India itself.
As for its specifications, the Ka-226T is a light helicopter. It possesses a maximum take-off weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes and can sustain a payload amounting to 1 tonne.
Special Features of the Ka-226T
A standout feature of the Ka-226T is the use of coaxial rotors. Rather than the conventional single rotor, it incorporates two sets of rotors stacked atop each other, typically without a tail rotor. This configuration boosts the helicopter’s lift and payload capacity, a significant advantage, particularly in high-altitude environments where aircraft performance tends to worsen due to decreased air density.
Another unique attribute of the Ka-226T is the detachable ‘mission’ compartment, replacing the conventional cabin. This innovative design allows the helicopter to adapt for different roles, such as surveillance and cargo delivery.
Problems with the Existing Helicopter Fleet
The current fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters in the Army comprises aircraft that are predominantly over three decades old, some reaching half a century. Such obsolete machines urgently require replacements. Their operational capability has suffered due to deficiencies and a lack of suitable replacements.
Indian Army’s Helicopter Requirement
The Indian Army requires approximately 400 such helicopters to meet its operational needs adequately. The procurement of the Kamov-226T helicopters is a step towards fulfilling this demand, thereby upgrading the country’s military air support.
