Indian Defence Minister Commissions ICGS Varaha at Chennai Port

The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varaha was recently commissioned at the port of Chennai by India’s Defence Minister. The ICGS Varaha is the fourth of seven 98-m Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) being developed for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). This ship represents a significant advancement in the nation’s maritime defence capabilities, as it has been designed and constructed within India.

Varaha’s Design and Capabilities

Designed and built domestically, the ICGS Varaha will operate from New Mangalore on the West Coast, spanning the Exclusive Economic Zone up to Kanyakumari. It boasts cutting-edge navigation and communication system, integrating technologies like the Integrated Bridge System, Automated Power Management System, along with the indigenously built Integrated Platform Management System and Halo Traversing System.

This vessel stands capable of operating the indigenously developed advanced light helicopter by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It is equipped with high-speed boats, extensive medical facilities, and state-of-the-art surveillance systems. These facilities enable the ICGS Varaha to carry out an array of operations including boarding operations, search and rescue, law enforcement, and maritime patrolling.

Enhanced Maritime Security

The addition of Varaha to the Indian Coast Guard fleet significantly enhances the ICG’s capacity to respond to maritime threats such as terrorism, smuggling, and other maritime enforcement challenges. Equipped with modern technologies and facilities, it is poised to be a formidable force in securing India’s maritime zones.

About the Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard was established on 18th August 1978 through Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India as an independent Armed force. Operating under the Ministry of Defence, it is headquartered in New Delhi. It bears responsibility for the territorial waters of India including its contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone.

Additionally, it plays a significant role in preserving the marine environment in the maritime zones of India and is the coordinating authority for responding to oil spills in Indian waters. With the addition of the ICGS Varaha to its fleet, the Indian Coast Guard continues to strengthen its position in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
