Indian Foreign Service Day is a celebration marking the establishment of the Indian Foreign Service by the Indian Cabinet. On this day in 1946, the Indian Government laid the foundations of the IFS with the purpose of managing India’s diplomatic, consular and commercial representation abroad.
With the attainment of independence, the former Foreign and Political Department underwent a near-total transformation, paving the way for the new Ministry of External Affairs. The establishment of this service marked a new chapter in India’s foreign relations, offering a fresh platform for working with external powers.
Origins of the Indian Foreign Service
The roots of the Indian Foreign Service extend back to the era of British rule in India. The then government had formed the Foreign Department with the specific intention of conducting business with “Foreign European Powers”. This move was the first step towards creating a department focused solely on foreign affairs.
Key Roles in the Indian Foreign Service
Members of the Indian Foreign Service occupy various prestigious roles such as Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Consul Generals, Permanent Representatives of India to the United Nations and Foreign Secretary. These positions enable them to represent India and its interests on the global stage.
Contributions of Foreign Service Officers
As career diplomats, Foreign Service Officers carry the responsibility of promoting India’s interests, both domestically and internationally. Their role encompasses several areas such as bilateral political and economic cooperation, trade and investment promotion, cultural interaction, press and media liaison, and numerous multilateral issues.
One notable instance of their outstanding service was during the Russia-Ukraine war, where officers effectively managed Operation Ganga. This operation was critical in evacuating Indian citizens amidst the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, especially those who had crossed over to nearby countries.
Under the Vande Bharat Mission, Foreign Service Officers also helped in repatriating lakhs of stranded Indians back home by air, sea and land routes across several borders.
