Indian Institutes Top NIRF and ARIIA 2019 Rankings

The President of India unveiled the results for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-2019 and Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA)-2019 at a ceremony in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This marked the fourth installment of the NIRF Rankings and the inaugural edition of the ARIIA ranking.

Highlights of NIRF Rankings 2019

The Indian Institute of Madras (IIT Madras) was awarded the top position in the ‘overall category’. Out of the top ten ranked institutions, seven were IITs, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi securing the seventh rank. The list of top 100 included seven institutions from Karnataka.

In distinct categories, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru led the ‘University category’, while Banaras Hindu University (BHU) maintained its third position among the nation’s universities for the third year straight. Miranda House, Delhi topped the colleges category, IIT Madras triumphed in the engineering field, and the National Law School of India University, Bangalore stood first in the law category. Other category leaders included IIT Kharagpur in Architecture, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the medical field, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore in the management sector, and Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi in the ‘Pharmacy Category’.

ARIIA Rankings 2019

In the ARIIA Rankings, IIT Madras topped the ‘Public funded Institutions Category’, while Vellore Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu took the lead in the ‘Private Institutions Category’.

About the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)

Launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015, the NIRF aims to rank institutions across India based on parameters like Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception. The 2019 rankings were divided into eight categories: Overall, Universities, Engineering, Medical, Management, Law, Architecture, Pharmacy, and Colleges.

About Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA)

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India’s ARIIA initiative aims to rank higher educational institutions and universities in India based on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development” indicators among students and faculties. These indicators include Budget & Funding Support, Infrastructure & Facilities, Support for Idea Generation & Innovation, Promotion & Support for Entrepreneurship Development, Innovative Learning Methods & Courses, Intellectual Property Generation, Technology Transfer & Commercialization, and Innovation in Governance of the Institution. ARIIA emphasizes more on the quality of innovations and their real impact nationally and internationally, rather than their quantity.
