Indian Navy’s New Missile Vessels

In 2024, the Indian Navy has made strides in enhancing its maritime capabilities through a partnership with General Electric (GE) Aerospace. The selection of GE’s LM2500 marine engines for the Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV) marks a decisive development in India’s naval defence strategy. This collaboration not only underscores the importance of advanced technology in modern warfare but also marks India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing, a key aspect of the Make in India initiative.

About the NGMV Project

The NGMV project aims to construct six advanced missile vessels designed for high-speed operations and equipped with sophisticated weaponry. With a maximum speed of 35 knots, these vessels are engineered to perform anti-surface warfare missions effectively. The choice of the LM2500 engine, known for its reliability and power, is central to achieving these operational capabilities. The LM2500 is a marine gas turbine that has been widely used across the globe, powering over 714 vessels, which attests to its proven performance.

The Role of GE Aerospace

GE Aerospace’s involvement extends beyond just supplying engines. The company will provide a comprehensive package including composite bases, enclosures, and auxiliary systems, ensuring that the NGMV vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Amy Gowder, President and CEO of GE Aerospace Defense & Systems, emphasised the significance of this partnership, stating that the LM2500 is ideal for the NGMV mission due to its power and stealth capabilities. This collaboration is a testament to the growing relationship between Indian defence manufacturers and international technology providers.

Significance of Make in India

The contract awarded to Cochin Shipyard Limited, valued at ₹9,805 crore, is an important boost to India’s defence manufacturing sector. It aligns with the government’s Make in India initiative, which aims to reduce dependence on foreign imports by encourageing indigenous production. The partnership with GE Aerospace is a critical step towards achieving this goal, as it facilitates knowledge transfer and skill development within the Indian defence ecosystem. Furthermore, the assembly and testing of LM2500 engines by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru will enhance local capabilities.
