Indian & Omani Air Forces Begin Eastern Bridge VI Exercise

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has recently initiated a joint military exercise with the Royal Air Force of Oman. This bilateral exercise, named Eastern Bridge VI, is set to run for five days at the Jodhpur air force station. It represents the sixth iteration of such military collaborations between the two nations. The intent behind these exercises is to facilitate professional interaction and the exchange of experiences. In addition, they are designed to enhance operational knowledge while reinforcing the diplomatic bonds between India and Oman.

The History of Eastern Bridge Exercises

The previous exercise, Eastern Bridge V, took place in October 2019 at the Air Force Base Masirah, Oman. Over the years, these gatherings have evolved into critical platforms for sharing tactical strategies and honing operational skills.

Oman’s Strategic Significance to India

Oman is a key defense partner for India in the Gulf region. The country’s strategic location at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz, from where India imports a significant portion of its oil, amplifies Oman’s importance. Defense cooperation has become one of the cornerstones of the robust strategic partnership shared by India and Oman.

Framework for Defense Cooperation

A Framework MOU, which was recently renewed in 2021, guides the defense exchanges between these nations. Oman distinguishes itself as the only country in the Gulf region that conducts regular bilateral exercises and staff talks with all three services of the Indian armed forces. This arrangement fosters close cooperation and trust at the professional level. Both countries carry out various joint exercises like Naseem Al-Bahr (naval exercise), AL Nagah (army exercise), and Eastern Bridge (air force exercise).

Oman’s Support to Indian Naval Missions

Oman plays a critical role in providing operational support to Indian naval deployments in the Arabian Sea for anti-piracy missions. Moreover, Oman takes active part in the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS). India reciprocates by supplying rifles to Oman and is even considering establishing a defense production unit in the country.

Strategic Access to the Port of Duqm in Oman

In its strategic efforts to broaden its influence in the Indian Ocean region, India has gained access to the crucial Port of Duqm in Oman for military use and logistical support. This move is integral to India’s maritime strategy, aimed at countering Chinese activities in the region. The Port of Duqm is located on the southeastern seaboard of Oman, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Its proximity to the Chabahar port in Iran makes it strategically significant. Along with the Assumption Island in Seychelles and Agalega in Mauritius, Duqm forms an essential part of India’s proactive maritime security roadmap.
