The Indian Prime Minister recently gave an address via video conference at the SPIC MACAY’s International Convention, where he applauded the new elements incorporated into the convention this year.
SPIC MACAY and its Initiatives
SPIC MACAY, or the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth, is a non-political, nationwide, voluntary movement. It was established in 1977 by Dr Kiran Seth, who received the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contribution to the arts. The Society operates as a participatory student movement under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, and its primary aim is to enrich formal education’s quality. This is achieved through raising awareness about various aspects of Indian heritage, thereby inspiring young minds to adopt the values inherent in it.
The Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Ministry of Human Resource Development provide national support to SPIC MACAY. Over the last 35 years, the Society has organized national and international conventions. More recently, it has launched “Anubhav,” a week-long online project guiding youngsters to explore India’s mystical and diverse art, culture, and heritage. This initiative is expected to alleviate the stress induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.
With its central executive body located in New Delhi, SPIC MACAY delivers its programs through a global network of schools, colleges, and educational institutions.
Acknowledgement and Awards
In 2011, SPIC MACAY was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana award. This accolade acknowledges its significant contribution to youth development. The Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award was instituted in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1992, a year after his assassination. Each year, this award is presented to individuals who have dedicated their lives to promoting social harmony. It includes a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 10 Lakh.
The Prime Minister’s Address
In his address, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the innovative elements brought in this year’s SPIC MACAY convention. Among these were a nature walk, heritage walk, literature, holistic food, and sessions on Yoga and Naad Yoga. He emphasized the importance of music in strengthening the vision of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’. Through his speech, he highlighted the significant role that organisations like SPIC MACAY play in propagating Indian culture and values amongst the youth. Also, he underlined how such platforms could prove vital in building a stronger and more unified India.
Thus, through its programs, awards, and recognitions, SPIC MACAY continues to enrich India’s cultural landscape while providing young people with the resources and knowledge they need to appreciate and preserve the nation’s rich heritage.
