The Indian Railways has recently launched a pioneering scheme named ‘Bharat Gaurav,’ aimed at showcasing India’s significant tourism potential. This innovative program expands the conventional train segments of passengers and goods to include a new category dedicated to tourism.
‘Bharat Gaurav’: The Tourism Train
The novelty of the ‘Bharat Gaurav’ scheme is highlighted by the introduction of a third segment for trains, specifically devoted to tourism. Unlike regular trains operating on a strict timetable, these special trains will follow the pattern of the Ramayana Express, currently run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
This initiative will see the operation of theme-based tourist circuit trains. Both private entities and the IRCTC will manage these trains, which will venture on routes aligned with specific themes. Examples of these include the Guru Kripa train visiting all locations associated with Guru Nanak or a Ramayan-themed train touring sites tied to Lord Ram.
The opportunity to take control of these trains and conduct them along unique tourism circuits based on a theme will be available to societies, trusts, consortia, and even state governments.
Packages for Tourists
Service providers are expected to offer comprehensive packages that include all elements of a tourist’s journey. This broad service range encompasses rail travel, hotel accommodation, sightseeing arrangements, visits to historical or heritage sites, and tour guides.
Benefits of the Scheme
The ‘Bharat Gaurav’ scheme opens a window into India’s rich cultural heritage and stunning historical sites for both domestic and international tourists. It also seeks to capitalize on India’s immense tourism potential.
Related Schemes
The new scheme complements previously launched programs such as the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, PRASHAD Scheme, Buddhist Conclave, and ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ Initiative, which all aim to stimulate interest in Indian tourism.
Tourism in India: An Economic Perspective
Tourism plays a vital role in India’s economy and has observed significant growth. The World Travel and Tourism Council states that the travel & tourism industry contributed USD 121.9 billion to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020. This figure is projected to escalate to USD 512 billion by 2028.
A direct contribution to the GDP from the industry is expected to record a remarkable annual growth rate of 10.35% between 2019 and 2028 in India. Further, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 ranked India 34th out of 140 countries, underscoring India’s diligent efforts to improve its standing in this sector.
