Indian research vessel Sagar Nidhi

Indian research vessel Sagar Nidhi

In a notable development in maritime cooperation, scientists from Bangladesh and Mauritius have embarked on a collaborative oceanic expedition aboard the Indian research vessel ‘Sagar Nidhi.’ This joint endeavor aims to analyze ocean data, predict and manage changes in the marine environment, and study variations in ocean parameters. Organized by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), this research cruise showcases the shared commitment of Indian Ocean Region nations to protect and study the ecosystem of the Indian Ocean.

An Outcome of the Colombo Security Conclave

The collaborative expedition is an outcome of the maiden Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) Oceanographers and Hydrographers conference held in Goa and Hyderabad in November 2022. The conference brought together experts from various nations in the Indian Ocean Region to foster maritime cooperation and address common challenges in the marine domain.

Collective Analysis of Ocean Data

The primary objective of this research cruise is to collectively analyze ocean data. By pooling resources and expertise, scientists from Bangladesh, Mauritius, and India aim to enhance their understanding of the marine environment. This collaborative effort will contribute to predicting and managing changes in the ocean, ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources, and protecting the fragile marine ecosystem.

The Vessel: Sagar Nidhi

The research expedition takes place aboard the Ocean Research Vessel Sagar Nidhi. This state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research ship is operated by the National Institute of Ocean Technology. Constructed at Fincantieri, Italy, the vessel spans an impressive 104 meters in length and is powered by fully automatic diesel-electric propulsion. With its advanced capabilities, Sagar Nidhi provides an ideal platform for conducting comprehensive oceanic research.

Collaboration for Ocean Protection

The participation of scientists from Bangladesh, Mauritius, and India in this expedition highlights their shared commitment to study and protect the Indian Ocean’s ecosystem. By collaborating on research initiatives, these nations demonstrate their dedication to preserving the marine environment and ensuring the sustainable management of ocean resources. Such cooperation is essential for addressing the transboundary challenges that affect the Indian Ocean Region.

Sagar Nidhi: Advancing Ocean Research

Commissioned in 2008 for India’s marine research program, Sagar Nidhi is the third research vessel after Sagar Purvi and Sagar Paschimi. With its blue-water capability, the vessel can undertake geo-scientific, meteorological, and oceanographic research. It is designed for extended voyages lasting up to 45 days and possesses a range of up to 10,000 nautical miles (19,000 km). Sagar Nidhi has also achieved a significant milestone as the first Indian-flagged research ship to reach the 66S latitude.

Towards the Blue Economy and Deep Ocean Mission

Research vessels play a crucial role in the exploration and harnessing of ocean resources for the Blue Economy. These ships facilitate participation in search and rescue operations and support the implementation of initiatives such as the Deep Ocean Mission. Sagar Nidhi’s capabilities contribute to India’s aspirations in these areas and reinforce its commitment to scientific exploration and sustainable ocean management.
