India’s Automotive Mission Plan 2047 – Strategic Roadmap

India’s Automotive Mission Plan 2047 – Strategic Roadmap

The Government of India has launched the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047). This initiative aligns with the ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision. It aims to position India as a global leader in the automotive sector. The focus is on innovation, sustainability, and increasing India’s share in global automotive trade.

Background and Vision

AMP 2047 builds on the earlier AMP 2016-2026 plan. The previous plan aimed to place India among the top three global automotive hubs. It targeted growth in vehicle and component manufacturing, exports, and employment. AMP 2047 extends this vision to 2047 with clear milestones for 2030, 2037, and 2047. The goal is to enhance India’s global standing through quality and innovation.

Structure and Stakeholders

Seven sub-committees have been formed to develop the plan. These include experts from government, industry, and academia. Key ministries involved are Heavy Industries, Power, Road Transport, Commerce, Petroleum, and Environment. Industry bodies such as SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI also participate. Academic institutions and research agencies contribute to technology and policy inputs.

Strategic Objectives

The mission aims to boost sector growth, exports, and industry advancement. It seeks to integrate OEMs, auto component manufacturers, policymakers, and end users. Challenges like technological shifts, electric vehicle infrastructure, and sustainability are central to the plan. Concrete targets will guide progress and investment decisions.

Innovation and Sustainability Focus

AMP 2047 emphasises innovation beyond specific technologies or companies. It promotes green mobility solutions and clean energy adoption. Charging infrastructure and emission reduction are key priorities. The plan supports research and development to encourage new technologies and manufacturing excellence.

Economic and Employment Impact

The automotive sector is critical to India’s economy. AMP 2016-2026 targeted 12% of GDP contribution and 65 million new jobs. AMP 2047 aims to expand these gains further. The plan envisages enhanced export capabilities and global trade share. It also focuses on skill development and workforce empowerment.

Collaborative Governance

AMP 2047 is an industry-led effort with strong government coordination. Multi-ministry collaboration ensures policy coherence. Industry bodies and academia provide technical and market insights. Testing agencies support quality standards and safety compliance. This collective approach aims for a resilient and competitive automotive ecosystem.
