Concurrently, advancements in farming practices are projected to result in a 1% increase in China’s cotton output, allowing the nation to reclaim the ‘top producer’ title from India, which it lost in the 2015-16 season.
The Challenges of Cotton Production in India
The expected decline in India’s cotton productivity can be traced back to several factors. First and foremost, around 77% of the country’s cotton-growing region lacks proper irrigation systems, thus heavily relying on rainwater for their crops. This situation has been particularly challenging in light of recent insufficient rainfall.
Moreover, farmers show no enthusiasm in expanding cotton cultivation due to the persistent threat of pests. The lack of understanding or awareness about effective farming practices also contributes significantly to the drop in productivity.
