India’s Cyber Crime Coordination Teams Established

The Government of India has intensified its efforts to combat cybercrime by establishing seven joint cyber coordination teams. This initiative aims to enhance coordination among various law enforcement agencies addressing cyber threats across the country. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) plays a very important role in this strategy.

Formation of Joint Cyber Coordination Teams

The Centre has created seven joint cyber coordination teams in key locations – Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Vishakhapatnam, and Guwahati. These areas have been identified as cybercrime hotspots. The teams will facilitate better collaboration among state and Union territory law enforcement agencies. This initiative is crucial for addressing multi-jurisdictional cyber issues.

Role of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre

The I4C operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It has proactively identified and blocked numerous online threats. Over 3,962 Skype IDs and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts linked to cyber fraud have been disabled. The centre also focuses on blocking SIM cards and IMEIs associated with digital crimes.

Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting System

Launched in 2021, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System allows citizens to report financial frauds instantly. This system has helped save over Rs. 4,386 crore by addressing more than 13.36 lakh complaints. It provides a toll-free helpline (1930) for assistance in lodging online complaints.

Creation of a Suspect Registry

On September 10, 2024, I4C introduced a suspect registry. This registry contains identifiers of cyber criminals and is developed in collaboration with banks and financial institutions. To date, over 8 lakh suspect records and more than 20 lakh mule accounts have been shared. This initiative has saved an additional Rs. 2,889 crore.
