India has taken a significant stride towards achieving self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing with Micron Technology Inc’s recent commitment to establish the country’s first semiconductor plant in Gujarat. The project, valued at Rs 22,500 crore (USD 2.75 billion), marks a crucial step towards reducing India’s reliance on semiconductor imports and boosting its technological capabilities and economic growth.
Micron Technology and Gujarat’s Semiconductor Venture
Micron Technology Inc, a renowned US-based semiconductor manufacturer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government to set up a cutting-edge semiconductor unit in Sanand, near Ahmedabad. The collaboration between Micron Technology and Gujarat is the second such MoU in the state with a semiconductor manufacturer, reflecting the region’s commitment to attracting investments in the semiconductor sector.
The project’s total investment of USD 2.75 billion indicates the seriousness of the endeavor and underscores the significance of establishing India’s first semiconductor plant. The Sanand facility is projected to create 5,000 direct jobs, addressing both domestic and international market demands for memory chips.
