Indore’s Green Waste Processing Initiative Launched

Indore has launched India’s first public-private partnership (PPP) model green waste processing plant. This initiative is part of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. It aims to transform urban waste management by converting green waste into valuable resources. The project represents step towards environmental sustainability and innovation in waste management.

Overview of the Green Waste Processing Plant

The plant is located in Bicholi Hapsi and spans 55,000 square feet. It will process green waste such as wood, branches, leaves, and flowers. The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) will earn around Rs 3,000 per tonne from supplying wood and branches. The facility will recycle this green waste into wooden pellets, serving as an alternative to coal.

Green Waste Collection and Processing

Indore generates approximately 30 tons of green waste daily. During autumn, this can increase to 60 to 70 tons. Major institutions will have their green waste collected directly. A fixed fee structure will streamline this process. The collected green waste will undergo a drying process over three to four months. This will reduce moisture content by 90%, making it suitable for further processing.

Transformation into Valuable Products

After drying, the green waste will be processed into fine sawdust. This sawdust has multiple applications. It can be used as eco-friendly fuel, packing materials, composite materials for furniture, and fertilisers. Additionally, it can be moulded into biodegradable plates for the food industry. This transformation contributes to a circular economy by reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

Role of the Indore Municipal Corporation

The IMC plays important role in this initiative. It will provide land and transport green waste to the plant. The private company, Astronomical Industries Private Limited, will establish the infrastructure. This includes sheds, electricity, and water facilities. They will also manage the plant’s operation, ensuring efficiency.

Additional Waste Management Efforts

Other private firms have established smaller plants for processing garden waste. Composting is also being conducted in specially designed compost pits within municipal gardens. These efforts enhance overall waste management practices in Indore.

The green waste processing initiative aims to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Indore. By managing waste effectively, it reduces pollution and the burning of waste.
