INS Vaghsheer Delivered

India’s defence capabilities have taken leap with the delivery of INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final Scorpene-class submarine. Handed over by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), this submarine is set to enhance the Indian Navy‘s operational prowess. The commissioning of Vaghsheer marks a milestone in India’s journey as a submarine-building nation.

Background of Scorpene Submarines

The Scorpene-class submarines are a series of diesel-electric attack submarines designed for a variety of missions. They are built under a technology transfer agreement between India and France. The six submarines include Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Vela, Vagir, and Vaghsheer. Each vessel is designed to operate stealthily and effectively in various maritime environments.

Launch and Delivery

INS Vaghsheer was launched on 20 April 2022. Following extensive testing and trials, it was officially handed over to the Indian Navy. The Acceptance Document was signed by key officials from both MDL and the Navy, underscoring the collaborative efforts in this project.

Stealth and Combat Capabilities

Vaghsheer features advanced stealth technology. It employs acoustic absorption techniques and has low radiated noise levels. Its hydrodynamic design enhances its stealth profile. The submarine can launch torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, both while submerged and on the surface. This capability allows for effective engagement in various combat scenarios.

Operational Versatility

The submarine is capable of undertaking multiple missions. These include anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and area surveillance. Vaghsheer’s design allows for interoperability with other naval assets, making it a vital component of naval task forces.

Technological Advancements

Vaghsheer incorporates state-of-the-art technology. It features an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) and a Combat Management System (CMS). These systems integrate various equipment and sensors, enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, it has been fitted with an indigenously developed air conditioning plant and a communication system.

Modernisation of MDL

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders has modernised its infrastructure to meet growing maritime demands. The facility can now build 10 capital warships and 11 submarines simultaneously. Future expansion plans aim to further enhance its capabilities, ensuring readiness for the Indian Navy’s requirements.

Significance for India

The delivery of INS Vaghsheer reinforces India’s status as a submarine-building nation. It showcases indigenous capabilities and advancements in naval technology. The submarine is expected to play important role in strengthening maritime security and operational readiness in the region.
