Iran Resumes Uranium Enrichment, Contravening 2015 Agreement

Recently, Iran recommenced its uranium enrichment process at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), an underground facility located near Tehran. This development has gained global attention, as it marks a deviation from the nuclear agreement that Iran signed in 2015 with a coalition of world powers. This article provides key insights surrounding this new development and its possible implications.

About the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP)

The FFEP serves as Iran’s second pilot enrichment facility, following the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant at Natanz. It is originally a tunnel facility associated with Iran’s paramilitary organization, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The site is strategically positioned, buried under a mountain near Qom, a city located about 120 km from Iran’s capital, Tehran. The location provides an added security cover, protecting it from potential external attacks.

The Iran Nuclear Deal

In 2015, Iran agreed to a long-term deal concerning its nuclear programme with the P5+1 group of world powers. The group consisted of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, and Germany. The agreement was christened as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred to as the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Under the JCPOA, Iran committed to limiting its nuclear activities. This involved halting its uranium enrichment and allowing international agencies to inspect its nuclear facilities. In return, economic sanctions against the country would be lifted, providing relief to the nation’s struggling economy.

United States Withdrawal from the Deal and Imposition of Sanctions

However, the dynamics changed dramatically in May 2018 when the United States decided to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal. The US proceeded to impose sanctions on Iran and any nations found to be significantly trading with it.

The Impact of Iran’s Decision to Resume Uranium Enrichment

Iran’s latest move to resume uranium enrichment poses a significant shift against the agreement with the P5+1 group. This has ignited fresh tension, stirring apprehensions about a renewed threat of nuclear proliferation. Further developments in this case will be tracked closely worldwide, considering its potential global security implications.
