Island of Lampedusa

Island of Lampedusa

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a recent visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is grappling with a significant increase in migrant arrivals. Situated closer to North Africa than the Italian mainland, Lampedusa has long been a focal point for people smugglers. Currently, it receives approximately 70% of all migrants arriving in Italy, primarily from various African nations, including Ivory Coast, Guinea, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Tunisia. Additionally, there’s a growing influx from neighboring Libya, including citizens of Egypt, Eritrea, and Sudan, who are fleeing conflict and socio-economic instability in their home countries.
