ISRO Successfully Tests Low-Cost Star Sensor StarBerrySense

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recently celebrated the successful launch and testing of a low-cost star sensor, StarBerrySense. Mounted onto the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM), this technological leap has demonstrated its robustness in space’s harsh conditions.

A Sneak Peek into StarBerrySense

Developed by the dedicated Space Payloads Group at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), StarBerrySense is a cost-effective sensor that swiftly calculates the orientation of a spacecraft. It achieves this by identifying stars within its field of view. Simplified to build and cost-efficient, the technology forms its core around a Raspberry Pi minicomputer.

The POEM Initiative and StarBerrySense Performance

In an innovative effort, ISRO has used the spent 4th stage of the PSLV as an orbital platform under the POEM project. This platform is essentially used for conducting scientific experiments. The preliminary results from the StarBerrySense test are promising. The system endured space’s severe conditions, successfully providing accurate pointing direction calculations with its onboard software and imaging equipment.

In another part of the world, Uganda’s parliament has passed a stringent anti-LGBTQ bill, facing international criticism but holding on to most of its extreme measures.

The Controversial Anti-LGBTQ Bill of Uganda

The legislation includes dire provisions like the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and a hefty 20-year sentence for promoting homosexuality in any form. Human rights activists have pointed out that these laws pose a threat to advocacy for LGBTQ citizens. The bill has been slightly amended to clarify that merely identifying as LGBTQ is not illegal. Obligation to report homosexual activity is called upon only when a child is involved. However, these amendments have been criticized as inadequate by activists. The bill now awaits the president’s approval.

National Manufacturing Innovation Survey Results

The National Manufacturing Innovation Survey (NMIS) 2021-22 has recognized Karnataka as the most innovative state in India. Conducted jointly by the Department of Science and Technology and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the survey analyzed innovation processes, outcomes, and barriers among manufacturing firms. The study revealed hurdles like a lack of internal funds, high innovation costs, and subpar external financing as the main deterrents to innovation.

Finally, the Khond Tribe in Odisha celebrates Bihan Mela, a seed festival that resonates with their deep-rooted connection with nature.

The Cultural Significance of Bihan Mela

Bihan Mela is a thriving tradition where seed collections of hybrid and indigenous varieties commence after farmers harvest Kharif crops. Women lead this festival by storing these seeds in earthen pots and carrying them in bamboo baskets on a designated day in December. A return to traditional farming practices like mixed cropping is encouraged through this festival, emphasizing the importance of native, pest-resistant crops.

The Functioning of Seed Banks

To ensure availability and access to indigenous seeds, a seed bank was established. Its straightforward operations involve collecting and preserving indigenous seeds from Kondh villages and loaning them to farmers. The seed bank is accessible to all Khond farmers. Known for their rich cultural heritage, martial traditions, and relationship with nature, the Khonds are Odisha’s largest tribal group.
