ISRO Supports Eight Joint Research Projects with IIT-Delhi

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently announced its intention to back eight joint research projects proposed by Space Technology Cell (STC), IIT-Delhi. The support from ISRO comes under its RESPOND programme, which has been active since the 1970s. There are several key aspects pertaining to this development, which include crucial programmes and upcoming missions that bear significance to India’s space research ambitions.

Understanding the RESPOND Programme

Launched in the 1970s by ISRO, the RESPOND (Research Sponsored) Programme aims to foster increased collaboration between the academic sector and space-related research activities. The Programme provides financial assistance, enabling R&D activities related to Space Science, Space Technology, and Space Applications within Academic Institutions across India.

As ISRO’s flagship initiative to stimulate extramural research in emerging areas of space study at the academia, the RESPOND programme seeks to enhance the Academic base, generate human resources, and bolster infrastructure at Academic Institutions in support of the Space Programmes.

Gaganyaan – India’s First Human Spaceflight Mission

India is paving the way towards launching its first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan. This mission will see Indian astronauts conducting experiments in space, a significant step towards preparing for future deep-space missions. The RESPOND programme actively contributes to this ambitious venture.

RESPOND’s Participation in National Missions

Apart from core space research endeavors, the RESPOND programme also participates in National Missions like the IMPRINT (IMPacting Research INnovation and Technology) programme and Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY).

The IMPRINT Programme

Unveiled in 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now renamed as Ministry of Education), the IMPRINT scheme is a pioneering Pan-IIT and IISc collaborative initiative. It seeks to address the major science and engineering hurdles India must overcome to empower the nation for inclusive growth and self-reliance. Guiding research into areas that are predominantly socially relevant is the main vision that IMPRINT provides.

Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana

Launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana aims to foster a higher level of innovation that directly impacts the needs of the Industry. The programme is crucial in enhancing the competitive edge of Indian manufacturing, thus leading to overall economic growth and development.
