The Jal Jeevan Mission has reached a new milestone by providing 3.53 Crore rural household tap water connections. Jal Jeevan Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019, with the aim to provide a tap water connection to every rural household by the year 2024.

- As of August 15, 2019, there was 3.23 Crore (17%) had tap water connections out of 18.93 Crore rural households.
- The efforts of States/ UTs have helped Jal Jeevan Mission to reach the milestone of providing 3.53 Crore tap water connections.
- Also, now every family living in 52 districts and 77000 villages are getting tap water supply in their homes.
- Now, more than 1/3rd of rural households i.e. 6.76 Crore (35.24%) are getting potable water through taps.
- Goa has become the first state in the country to provide 100% tap water connection followed by Telangana.
- Jal Jeevan Mission is working in partnership with the States to achieve the aim of providing potable water for every rural household on a regular and long-term basis.
- However, the mission was filled with challenges due to COVID-19. All construction and developmental work were greatly affected during the lockdown in most parts of the country.
Potable water supply to water quality-affected habitations is a top priority under Jal Jeevan Mission. Efforts are made to ensure safe drinking water to all quality-affected villages especially Arsenic and Fluoride affected rural habitations.
