Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has made a significant contribution to water conservation efforts in Madhya Pradesh by inaugurating over 57,000 water structures. This initiative is part of the ‘Jalabhishekam’ campaign, which was launched with the aim of enhancing water security and supporting agricultural activities in the region. The inauguration took place virtually from New Delhi, marking a substantial advancement in the state’s infrastructure and resource management.
Inauguration of Water Structures
The virtual event was hosted in Bhopal, where Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan was present. Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar also attended the program, highlighting the importance of the campaign. During the inauguration, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the significance of the water conservation work led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He noted that the involvement of the public was crucial in achieving the objectives of water conservation and creating a self-reliant Madhya Pradesh.
Construction During COVID-19
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Madhya Pradesh saw the creation of 57,653 water structures. This achievement was made possible by integrating the construction work with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme. The MNREGA provided not only employment opportunities during a difficult time but also facilitated the development of essential water conservation infrastructure.
Funding and Impact on Agriculture
The funding for these water structures exceeded 2000 crore rupees, indicating a significant investment in the region’s agricultural and water management systems. As a result of this investment, approximately two and a half lakh hectares of land now have improved agricultural irrigation facilities. Moreover, the groundwater level in the area has seen a noticeable increase, which is crucial for sustaining agriculture and supporting local communities.
‘Jalabhishekam’ Campaign Objectives
The ‘Jalabhishekam’ campaign is driven by the vision of ensuring ‘water for every farm and work for every hand’. By creating these water structures, the campaign aims to provide ample opportunities for employment and enhance the quality of life in rural areas. The initiative is not only about water conservation but also about the overall betterment of villages throughout Madhya Pradesh.
Significance of Water Conservation
Water conservation is increasingly recognized as an urgent priority across the globe. The structures built under the ‘Jalabhishekam’ campaign are expected to play a vital role in this endeavor. By securing water resources and promoting efficient use, the campaign supports the broader goals of environmental sustainability and resource management. The positive effects of these structures extend beyond immediate economic benefits, contributing to the long-term resilience and prosperity of the region.
