Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant’s 700 MW Reactor Goes Commercial

India has reached a significant milestone in its nuclear power sector with the commencement of commercial operations at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat. The indigenous 700 MW reactor, known as KAPP-3, became commercially operational on June 30, 2023, marking a major achievement in India’s domestic nuclear program.

A New Addition to India’s Nuclear Power Landscape

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has been spearheading the construction of two 700 MW pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at the Kakrapar site. These reactors, along with the existing two 220 MW power plants, are part of India’s efforts to expand its nuclear power generation capacity. The new reactor, KAPP-3, is currently operating at 90% of its total power capacity, contributing significantly to the country’s energy needs.

A Growing Portfolio of 700 MW Reactors

The NPCIL has ambitious plans to construct a total of sixteen 700 MW pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) across India. These reactors are designed to enhance the country’s nuclear power capacity and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. With two reactors already under construction at Kakrapar, additional 700 MW nuclear power plants are being built at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan (RAPS 7 and 8) and Gorakhpur in Haryana (GHAVP 1 and 2). This expansion demonstrates India’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy generation.

Advancements in PHWR Design

The Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant’s 700 MW reactor is a significant achievement in terms of technology scale-up and PHWR design optimization. It represents the largest indigenously developed variant of the Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor. The reactor’s criticality, a crucial milestone in India’s domestic civilian nuclear program, demonstrates the successful deployment of advanced nuclear technologies within the country.

Enhanced Performance and Efficiency

The operationalization of the 700 MW reactor at Kakrapar brings improvements in thermal margins and economies of scale without significant design changes from the previous 540 MW reactor. This optimization of the PHWR design ensures enhanced performance and efficiency, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the nuclear power plant.
