Kaliveli bird sanctuary

The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has suspended the environmental clearance for fishing harbours at Alamparaikuppam and Azhagankuppam, situated in the intertidal region of Kaliveli bird sanctuary. Kaliveli, South India’s second-largest brackish water lake, supports migratory birds on the Central Asian flyway. NGT, established under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010, is entrusted with timely application disposal. The tribunal comprises the Chairperson, Judicial Members, and Expert Members, aiming to safeguard environmental interests. This move highlights the significance of preserving ecologically sensitive areas for both local wildlife and migratory species.
