Kannada Language and Rajyotsava Day

On 1st November, Rajyotsava Day is celebrated every year. Also known as Kannada Day, Karnataka Rajyotsava, Karnataka Day and Kannada Rajyotsava.

Highlights

On November 1 in the year 1956, all Kannada-speaking regions of South India were united to form Karnataka. For this reason, Rajyotsava Day is celebrated on November 1st every year. This day is a local public holiday in the state of Karnataka. This day is marked by the announcement of the Rajyotsava Awards. This is the second highest civilian honor in Karnataka. Rajyotsava Prasasthi is the other name of this award. On this day, the official flag of Karnataka is raised. Other states that have proposed separate flags are Jammu & Kashmir and Tamil Nadu. As of the year 2021, there are no officially recognized flags of the union territories and the states. However, there are no legal restrictions that prevent a union state or territory from flying its own flag. State Chief Minister and Governor address the public on this day.

History of this day

The first person who tried to merge the state of Karnataka was Aluru Venkata Rao through the Karnataka Ekikarna Movement during the year 1905. In the year 1956, after India became a republic, the state of Mysore was formed. It consisted primarily of the Kannada-speaking regions of Bombay and Madras. But people didn’t like the name Mysore. Therefore, in the year 1973, the state?s name was changed to Karnataka.
