L&T Delivered Booster Segment for Gaganyaan Launch Vehicle to ISRO

Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) has delivered the first hardware called the booster segment for Gaganyaan Launch Vehicle to ISRO on November 17, 2020.


The booster segment was produced at L&T’s Powai Aerospace Manufacturing Facility, in Mumbai.  The segment meets the enhanced quality and timeline requirements for India’s first manned mission.

About booster segment

The booster segment have a diameter of 3.2 meters. It has a length of 8.5 meters and weights 5.5 tons. It was flagged off jointly by Dr. K Sivan the Secretary of the Department of Space & Chairman of ISRO and Jayant Patil the Whole-time Director and Member of L&T board.


It is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft. The spacecraft is being designed and it will carry three people to the space. The planned upgraded version will also be equipped with rendezvous and docking capability. The Gaganyaan mission is the first ever crewed mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The weight of the spacecraft is 3.7-tonne (8,200 lb) and it will orbit the Earth at an altitude of 400 km (250 mi) for seven days. ISRO has planned to launched this crewed capsule on ISRO’s GSLV Mk III in December 2021. The Crew module has been manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Its first un-crewed experimental flight on was launched on 18 December 2014. In the mission, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will provide support for critical human-centric systems and technologies such as space grade food, crew healthcare, parachutes for the safe recovery of the crew module & fire suppression system and radiation measurement & protection.
